Providing Services Through Partnership and collaboration.
Having limited resources is no longer an excuse and shouldn't hold a community based organization to achieve its goals, objectives and projects. Social Development Connect operates in Kayunga district, Kangulumira Sub county providing youth friendly services at Kangulumira Health center IV. Due to our limited resources and funding, SDC went into partnership with Kayunga district through the health center to provide a working space which also acts as an office to attend to the youths youths in the entire sub county.
In liaison with straight Talk Foundation, SDC distributes sex education and reproductive health publications to the youth in schools and the youths in the community at large.Social Development Connect counselors attend to all kinds of youths which include school going, non school going, males and females, teenage pregnant girls and young mothers. SDC also holds after school sex education and counseling sessions in the evening targeted at school going youths. SDC also extends youth friendly services to the weekends in order to give more time to all youths.
Rural youths have been isolated and made situations difficult to access right information concerning sex and reproductive health thus making wrong decisions concerning their bodies and life. With a mission,"Advocating and promoting community rural health and social development solutions", SDC decided to provide youth friendly services in Kangulumira sub county after Tamale Ashraf( founder of Social Development Connect) doing a research on poverty and teenage pregnancy during his final year at the university.
" I was attached by the high levels of teenage pregnancies in the sub county most when I did my research. Seeing young girls carrying babies breaks my heart and it a sign of survival of death during delivery. Having a child at a young age comes with so many responsibilities and burdens, for a girl having a child means end to education, more likely to be poor and remain poor, dropout of school and what always makes me drop tears is that is that girls are 5 times more likely to die in child birth(Girls not Brides). Lack of sex education and reproductives health care gave high response as an hypothesis used during my research thus leading to teenage pregnancy. With knowledge acquired and my research, I was inspired to give in the little resources I have and called up my fellow friends mainly social workers to work together to break the silent die of the beautiful and young souls. Started a CBO to help young rural people access right sex education and reproductive health information", Tamale Ashraf said.
